CHRISTINE

Christine was, at 12 years old,
The wisest child I knew,
With eyes that looked right in my soul,
And tears like morning dew.

Her older sister Amy
Was my sweetheart in high school
But young love often fades, you see
Some great unwritten rule

Christine often came to me
When her world grew hard to bear
and I was her friend, or tried to be
and I couldn't help but care.

I loved her like a sister then,
I think she loved me too,
But I went off to college and,
The miles between us grew.

I loved her like a sister, then,
I think she loved me too,
But I went off to college and,
The years just kind of flew.

But Amy called the other day
She sounded so confused
And through her tears I heard her say
She had some awful news

They found Chris on the bathroom floor
She'd slit her wrists, and died
She took her life at 24
Oh, where the hell was I?

She took her life, and broke our hearts
I never will know why
When her whole world all fell appart
Just where the hell was I?
