TAR BEACH Baby, I was born in New York City In the summer of '61 Seen alotta things, some were none too pretty But, Lord, I had some fun! Realy don't remember winter time I just remember heat Fire hydrents open, Sprinkler caps on Children playin' in the street! Stickball on the corner, here comes a car, The girls all jumpin' rope! Ivey and Juney were double-dutch stars, Keepin' time with songs of hope! Remember Motown, Soul, and Rock and Roll, Or some wild latino beat From a small transistor radio, When we were dancing in the street! Climbin' to the rooftop seven stories high Where our parents couldn't reach Jumpin' over aleyways, pretendin' we could fly To the roof we called Tar beach! The girls would tie there shirts into halter tops And try to catch a tan. I'd do accrobatics 'bove a seven story drop To try and prove I was a man.
