NEVER QUITE GOT THERE

I sent a letter to the University
Said: "Mom, I think I'm realy halfway there!"
"I'll get my doctorate in pre-vet medicine"
"I think that I have realy got the flare!"

I was on my way...
But I never quite got there,
I never quite got there.

Stuck out my thumb and headed for the west one day
And tried to hitch a ride to Oregon.
I had a dream about this peice of property,
That I could maybe turn into a farm

I was on my way...
But I never quite got there,
I never quite got there.

And I was gonna travel 'fore I settled down
But then I met somone in Arkansas...
We moved to Batton Rouge and we were maried there,
In the cutest little church you ever saw.

I was on my way...
But I never quite got there,
I never quite got there.

Was gonna write a book, in fact I started it,
I wrote 5 chapters back in eighty nine
But with a job, the house, and kids, it realy seems to me
That I will never, ever find the time...

I was on my way...
But I never quite got there,
I never quite got there.

I wasn't at the harbour when my ship came in
Too busy watching life just pass me by
Whenever opertunity came knocking at my door
I always found a reason not to try...

I was on my way...
But I never quite got there,
I never quite got there.
